The College of Arts and Letters at San Diego State University invites paper proposals for a Symposium on Thomas Paine: Common Sense for the Modern Era. The symposium will be held
October 21-22 2005 at San Diego State University. This interdisciplinary symposium brings together leading international scholars on Paine and his times, who will situate Paine’s work historically and/or comment about the importance of his ideas and the debates surrounding them for the modern era.
The symposium welcomes proposals for scholarly papers dealing with the following themes:
- Paine and the Age of Revolution
- Paine and Democratic Citizenship
- Paine, Human Rights, and Cosmopolitanism
Eric Foner, Joyce Appleby and Susan Jacoby are among the invited keynote speakers. Individual paper submissions should include an abstract of 200-300 words and the author's c.v. Complete panel submissions should include a cover letter stating the panel theme and rationale, at least three individual abstracts and a c.v. for each participant. Papers should have a reading time of 30 minutes. Deadline 5/6/05.
