Nineteenth-Century Medical Cultures, ASA 2005

We are looking for a panelist to present a paper on any aspect of the interface between medicine and culture in the 19th-century U.S. Possible topics include the rise of medical professionalism in cultural context; medicine vs. religion or superstition; alternative healing practices; debates about physical or mental health and cultural practices; medicine and social control; resistance to the ideology of medicine. In keeping with the conference theme of "Space and Place in American Cultures," we especially encourage submissions that address some aspect of medical space: hospitals, asylums, clinics, retreats, medical schools, etc. Please send one-page abstracts to Benjamin Reiss, Department of English, Tulane University (e-mail address provided below) by January 14.
