McGill-Queen's Graduate Student Conference in History
18-20 March 2005, Kingston, Ontario

The Graduate Students in History at McGill University and Queen's University are pleased to invite proposals for the Second Annual McGill-Queen's Student Conference in History. The intention of the conference is to bring together both Masters and Doctoral students working in a wide variety of fields in order to foster discussion in a multidisciplinary and bilingual environment. We encourage submissions from students of all historical periods and places, working in either French or English, on the broad theme of “Alternate Approaches.”

The keynote speaker will be Dr. Ronald N. Harpelle, Chair Department of History at Lakehead University. He is the author of The West Indians of Costa Rica (McGill-Queens & Randle of Jamaica, 2001), numerous articles focused on the developing world, and the producer and director of an award winning documentary film. Within the context of Latin American studies, he will be speaking to the theme of “alternate approaches” as it relates to non-traditional funding and publishing.

The conference will also feature the Kingston premiere of the National Film Board of Canada documentary Letters from Karelia (2004) which will be introduced by the director Kelly Saxberg.

Proposals should not exceed 250 words, should be accompanied by a short biographical sketch, and may be submitted in either French or English. The deadline for submissions is 5 January 2005.

Les étudiants aux cycles supérieurs en histoire des universités McGill et Queen's vous invitent à soumettre votre proposition de communication pour la seconde conférence étudiante annuelle McGill-Queen’s en histoire. Le but de cette conférence est de rassembler des étudiants à la maîtrise et au doctorat travaillant sur un vaste éventail de champs de recherches touchant à l'histoire afin de favoriser la tenue de discussions dans un environnement bilingue et multidisciplinaire. Nous encourageons les étudiants intéressés à l'histoire de toutes périodes et de toutes régions du monde à soumettre (en français ou en anglais) leur communication qui se rattache au thème "Approches Alternatives".

L'orateur principal sera Dr. Ronald N. Harpelle, directeur du département d'histoire à l'université de Lakehead. Il est l'auteur de The West Indians of Costa Rica (McGill-Queens et Randle de la Jamaïque, 2001), de nombreux articles sur le monde en voie de développement, et il est le producteur et le directeur d'un documentaire ayant reçu plusieurs prix. Dans le contexte des études latino-américaines, il abordera le thème des approches alternatives dans le domaine du financement et de l'édition non traditionnel.

Durant la conférence sera présenté pour la première fois a Kingston le film documentaire de l’office nationale du film du Canada Letters from Karelia (2004) qui sera présenté par le réalisateur Kelly Saxberg.

Votre proposition de communication ne doit pas excéder 250 mots et doit être accompagné d'un CV abrégé. La date limite pour soumettre une communication est le 5 janvier, 2005.
