Call for Papers

The Second International Symposium on Islamic Civilisation in the Volga-Ural Region will be jointly organized by the Research Centre for Islamic History, Art and Culture (IRCICA), the Municipality of Kazan, and Tatarstan Academy of Sciences / Institute of History in Kazan, Tatarstan, the Russian Federation on 22-25 June 2005. This scholarly event will be placed within the framework of the celebration of the 1000th anniversary of Kazan City.

The symposium comes under the series of symposia that are being organized by IRCICA since the mid-1980s focusing on the history of Islamic civilization in various regions of the world. The first symposium on “Islamic Civilisation in the Volga-Ural Region” was held in June 2001 in Kazan, by IRCICA jointly with the academic institutions of the Russian Federation and Tatarstan, with the participation of over sixty scholars and researchers from all continents.

The Second International Symposium on Islamic Civilisation in the Volga-Ural Region will reinforce and further expand the objectives of the 2001 symposium. It will highlight the processes of introduction and development of Islamic civilisation in the Volga-Ural region, the history of the coexistence of cultures and religions, relations between Islam and other religions in intellectual context, the Islamic and the multicultural heritage of the region in various fields of science and learning, and the various contemporary expressions and implications of this historical legacy. It is expected to open new avenues in social science research on the region and promote the existing studies all over the world.

The languages of the symposium are Tatar, Russian and English.

Room and board will be provided for the participants of the symposium.
