“Inquisitions and Persecutions in Early Modern Cultures," a summer institute for college and university teachers funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities, will be held at the University of Maryland, June 13 through July 15, 2005. During the five weeks of the institute, participants will join lead scholars Vincent Carey and Ralph Bauer to embark on a comparative study of representations of inquisitions and persecutions between 1530 and 1700 in Spain, England, and their respective colonies in the Americas and the wider Atlantic world. The interdisciplinary perspectives and intercontinental connectedness will, we hope, be suggestive of new directions in early modern studies. One of the many riches of this institute is the wealth of different voices, different perspectives, and different disciplines joined in a journey of discovery. The institute is designed to generate new questions and formulate new directions in research. We hope you will add your voice, your research, and your teaching experiences to the mix!
