A conference to be held September 16 - 18, 2005, in Cracow, Poland

The History Departments of the Jagiellonian University Cracow and the University of British Columbia invite proposals for papers for a conference devoted to the discussion of connections and influences as well as comparisons between the kingdoms of the British Isles and the kingdom and the commonwealth of Poland-Lithuania.
Contributors should consider exploring contacts between the two parts of northern Europe down to the Third Partition of Poland. The regions of the greatest geographical extent of all the constituent parts of both states are included in the scope of the conference. Contributors are invited to explore connections between the two regions and polities as well as comparisons, real or potential. Papers laying out possible topics of similarity or difference, for example, between institutions, commerce, political structures, political practices, literary genres, art and every day life are welcome. The programme committee will be pleased to undertake matching studies on similar topics, which cover the same topic but in only one of the two regions. Papers dealing with literature, music, art and architecture are welcome, as are papers on political, economic, social, institutional, religious, or cultural history.
Proposals for papers, typically of 25 minutes in length, with a short (250 word) abstract, and author’s short cv should be sent by 31 October, 2004, either to Richard W. Unger or Jakub Basista(e-mail addresses listed below). The programme committee will review the proposals and prepare the conference programme by 15 January 2005.
The language of the conference will be English.
