Johan Weier and Sigmund Freud: Science and Humanism in Psychology Past and Present
Johan Weier's De praestigiis daemonum and Sigmund Freud's Interpretation of Dreams stand as two revolutionary achievements in the history of Western culture. Weier, the father of modern psychiatry, battled the religious superstitions of the 16th century to foster a more rational and humane understanding of "witchcraft". Freud, the founder of psychoanalysis, devised a means to elucidate the mysteries of the unconscious mind and its relation to human sexual development. My discussion of these epochal figures will demonstrate the unique and necessary conjunction of science and humanism in the field of psychology.
This seminar is free and open to all interested in a serious scholarly discussion of the topic of Dr. Garcia’s talk. There will be no pre-circulated paper. Please RSVP to Margaret Patton (contact information provided below).
