This symposium will be a forum for students to present 20-minute papers organized under the broad theme of “Center and Periphery.” Possible paper topics could address: (1) the concept of western art as the “center” and non-western cultures being viewed as the “periphery”; (2) gender and sexuality issues as related to “center” and “periphery”; (3) a reversal of traditional concepts of “center” and “periphery”, either artistically or conceptually; (4) artists and institutions; (5) aesthetics and historical significance; (6) guilds, academies, and outsiders; (7) any number of other possible topics. Please submit proposals in the form of a 1-page abstract and curriculum vitae by mail to the University of Iowa, School of Art & Art History, E 100 Art Building, Iowa City, Iowa 52242, Attn: Graduate Art History Symposium.
