I wish to solicit papers from scholars interested in contributing to an edited volume on South Africa’s “Border War”. Whilst accepting that the use of such a label might be deemed to be an endorsement of the apartheid regime’s illegal occupation of Namibia and that the phrase “Namibian liberation struggle” might be preferable, I have no wish to be prescriptive nor politically correct for form’s sake.
Possible themes for such a volume might include:
- The historiography of the war
- Comparative military strategy/tactics of SADF and SWAPO forces
- Role of allies and liberation partners
- A reassessment of the war itself, including major military engagements such as Cuito Carnavale
- Denouement/resolution of the conflict and its ramifications
- the SADF as a conscript army and the role of the End Conscription Campaign
- Role of the media in the conflict
- The representation of the war in memoirs, novels, short stories, poetry, film (both fiction and documentary), music, photographs, artworks (comix, posters, graphics, etc.), theatre/drama works
- Trauma: veterans and PTSD
- TRC findings/omissions with respect to the war
- The amnesia about the war
If you are interested in making a contribution, I would appreciate receiving an expression of interest asap and a definite proposal by the end of October 2004. This should take the form of a 200 word abstract. It should be sent as an e-mail attachment to the e-mail address below and include your affiliation and full postal address.
