Obsidian III invites scholarly, previously unpublished essays on the body of work of Octavia Butler and of Edwidge Danticat. We are particularly interested in scholarship that engages Butler's most recently published work, Parable of the Sower and Parable of the Talents, and Danticat's The Dew Breaker and The Farming of Bones. Deadline: October 1, 2004
Essays on both writers can address but are not limited by the following:
- Gender and race issues
- historical and geographical issues
- identity
- speculative fiction
- feminist utopian fiction
- the female bildungsroman
- power and oppression
- relationships between aliens and humans
- the intersection of the imaginative, the historical, and the literary
- voice
- memory, history, and narrative
- boundaries: private versus public, physical versus virtual, physiological versus psychological
- transformations
- transgressing physical and imaginative worlds
- power, oppression, and reconciliation
