Post-Soviet Area description:
From perestroika to the present, war has been an essential element of the collapse of Soviet power and a central factor in the reconstruction of post-Soviet societies. What role has televised conflict played in the redefinition of states and civil society in the post-Soviet period? How have representations of conflict informed public debate in Russia, the other former Soviet republics and Eastern European states? How has this history been transformed as it is retold in film?
Analysis of television war reports and war films from the 1980s-the present allow for consideration of important questions in current history: How do depictions of violent conflict on the screen affect momentous historical change in progress? What role does the war film play in reclaiming history from myth? How are war films and televised war reports used by civil society in post-communist or post-totalitarian societies?
