In recognition of the bicentennial of Joseph Smith’s birth, the theme “Joseph Smith and the Creation of Mormon Religious Traditions” has been chosen for the May 26-29, 2005 conference. The Program Committee solicits submissions of presentations that focus on the life of Joseph Smith (1805-1844), including but not limited to his roles as founding prophet, civic leader, friend, and family member. We seek papers that address early Mormon doctrine, the social and cultural history of early Mormonism, and the relationship of Mormonism to other American religious traditions. Submissions that trace Mormonism to its historical roots are welcome, as are proposals that consider contemporary Mormon doctrines, cultures, and artistic expressions. Because the conference will be held in Vermont near the Joseph Smith birthplace, we also solicit papers that consider celebrations of his memory, historic sites, and religious pilgrimage. Of course, proposals that do not address the theme explicitly will also be considered. The submission deadline is October 1, 2004. Submit proposals electronically at www.mhahome.org
