We as organizers believe that the use of the word "Vernacular" will be helpful in advancing popular Culture Studies and other disciplines.
We hope that many of the Congress Papers explore the distinction between formalized reasoning and vernacular reasoning, that is, the difference between the reasoning characteristic to formal systems, an that which is, in senses needing to be explained out of the material of the research. The tensions of the vernacular approach can be found in historical, folklore, popular culture and other disciplines.
In sum, we would like the Congress Papers to relate their subjects to current theoretical debates if that is practical. As for performances it would be most helpful to have a brief analysis of it for posting to the website prior to July 31st, 2005.
