The following is a call for papers for a conference panel on military professionalism and the U.S. presidency from 1900-1920 at the Society for Military History (SMH) conference in February 2005.
The theme of the panel will be military professionalism and the U.S. presidency from 1900-1920. Panelists will be expected to use case studies from the said era to characterize the relationship between military professionals and early 20th century presidents. One paper will be discussing TR and his actions regarding the reforms instituted by Secretary of War Elihu Root, while another paper will analyze the Joint Board and its "fall from favor" with the Woodrow Wilson administration in May 1916. A third panelist, as well as a panel chairperson, are needed.
