This two-day conference seeks to explore the concepts of Presence and/or Absence as they pertain to Romance languages and literatures. Relevant themes and topics may include, but are not limited to:
The presence and/or absence of the authorial voice.
The presence of the text and the absence of that to which the text refers.
Between presence and absence, the virtual, the spectral, and the specular.
The relationship between the artifact (text, painting, music) and its copies/reproductions.
The continued presence of colonial institutions in post-colonial societies. Diaspora literature.
Intertextuality and the presence of texts within a text.
Past, Present, and Future.
Fantastic, Utopian, and Dystopian literature.
The treatment of Presence and Absence in Fiction and Criticism.
