Refuge Among the Mountains is a collaborative project that includes a student workshop, a public history symposium, a state marker dedication and a underground railroad bus tour. The public history syposium will be held Friday, October 15, 2004 at the Luzerne County Community College Educational Conference Center, Nanticoke, PA. The William C. Gildersleeve State Marker dedication is scheduled for Saturday, October 16, 2004 in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. A undergound railroad bus tour follows the marker dedication.
The public history symposium features James and Lois Horton, nationally recognized for their research and writing on African American history. The Hortons have published several books, including Hard Road to Freedom and In Hope of Liberty, and will be featured in this fall's PBS documentary on Antebellum slavery.
