Age, Gender and Domestic Culture, Royal Holloway 3rd July 2004
This interdisciplinary symposium will address the importance of age and gender to domestic culture, aiming to encourage discussion across disciplines and from both historical and contemporary perspectives. Papers will address:
Age, gender and the definition of house, home and domestic space.
Intergenerational conflict and co-operation in the home.
Lifecycle and changing roles, relationships and authority in the home.
The division of domestic space and duties according to age and gender.
Family rituals and celebration and their impact on gendered and/or age-related responsibilities, relationships and behaviour.
Textual and visual representations of age and gender and domestic life.
Domestic goods, their use and meaning according to age and gender.
Conference cost is Waged £20 and Unwages/Students £15
