Sport in East and West
Interdisciplinary Workshop on Sport History. Zurich, Sept. 30 - Oct. 1, 2005.
Sport has recently become an important issue in historical research. Since 1990 historians have incorporated more and more aspects of sport and physical education into their analyses.
The Working Group for Central and South-Eastern Europe (Forum Ostmittel- und Südosteuropa, FOSE) is organizing a workshop on "Sport in East and West" to comparatively analyze sport and physical education in different countries of Eastern Europe. The aim is to examine questions such as the evolution of different sport cultures and their regional characteristics, the role of sport in society and its political functions. For the workshop we invite submissions in the following fields:
- theoretical approaches to sport history
- comparative work on sport history in East and West
- case studies on sport in Eastern Europe
Papers could focus on one of the following topics:
- the predecessors of sport and physical education in the late middle ages and early modern times
- the role of sport in the process of differentiating work and leisure
- the role of sport in the self-construction of the individual in different political systems
- gender and sports
- sport and sport clubs as social spaces (integration, emancipation, exclusion and underground culture)
- sport competitions and the Cold War
- the role of wellness and trend sports in society
The workshop aims to provide junior scholars a framework for an open discussion on the questions involved. Therefore PhD students and post-docs of all disciplines are invited to propose a paper (in English or German). The final papers shall be published in a collection of essays (in English, French or German) after the workshop.
The deadline for submitting an abstract of max. 1 page is September 30, 2004.
