The Academic Council on Problems of African Countries and the Institute for African Studies, Russian Academy of Sciences, are convening the 10th Conference of Africanists on the subject "Security for Africa: internal and external aspects" on May 24-26, 2005.
The immediate objective of the 10th Conference is to discuss the following issues:
- Africa and Russia in a contemporary system of international relations;
- Role of UN in keeping stability in Africa;
- Digital divide and media literacy in Africa;
- Civilizational models of social evolution, cultural transformation and formation of political organisations;
- History of “Cold War” in Africa;
- History of Africa’s Resistance to external threats. Military operations on African continent (towards 60th anniversary of victory in World War II);
- Resources, exports/imports potential and Russia-Africa co-operation;
- International community in anti-terrorism struggle and Africa;
- African social problems as a source of instability;
- “Cultural Security” for Africa. The traditional cultures heritage, intercultural dialogue and “seductiveness of Westernization”;
- Economic security issues;
- North Africa and the Near East: democratisation, authoritarianism and security issues;
- Southern Africa: security issues;
- Interstate and intrastate conflicts. Ethnic and religious factors;
- Gender problems of contemporary Africa;
- Contemporary situation and challenging problems of African linguistics and literature.
The Organising Committee welcomes extra themes that will elaborate on the subject of the conference. The conference working languages are Russian and English. Its work will be conducted in plenary sessions, panels and round tables, where free discussion is envisaged.
The Organising Committee will be glad to consider panel and round-tables proposals (within 500 words in any of the Conference working languages) to be received by November 15, 2004. The information to be submitted alongside with the proposal, includes the panel convenor’s full name, title, institutional affiliation, full mail and e-mail addresses, and fax ¹, as well names, institutional affiliations, and e-mail addresses of potential participants.
Abstracts of papers (up to 500 words) accompanied by authors' short CVs are expected by e-mail by November 15, 2004 and full papers by January 15, 2005. A collection of abstracts is to be published before the conference and a collection of selected papers afterwards.
The Organising Committee will inform the applicants about the results of their panel proposals and abstracts consideration by December 15, 2004 .
The Conference participant’s registration fee, equivalent of $150 in Roubles is to be paid upon arrival. It includes the visa application support at the Russian Foreign Ministry, Conference Book of Abstracts in English as well as translation of a participant's abstracts into Russian, reception, coffee-breaks. The fee for an accompanying person is equivalent of $50 in Roubles.
