Contributions are sought for an anthology entitled "The Slaughterhouse and the City," a collection of interdisciplinary papers examining the cultural impact of the slaughterhouse in the industrial era. Scholarly research papers addressing any aspect of the slaughterhouse, including social conflicts between economic communities, the rationalization of the slaughterhouse as industry, the rhetoric of social hygiene and progress, and the transformation of meat into a bourgeois commodity, etc., will be considered. These papers will share a common interest in the construction of meaning inside the urban setting, the history of death and the representation of the body. Please send 800-1,000 word abstracts by July 1, 2004.
