The Peace process in Aceh has collapsed, but the problem remains of profound alienation and a military occupation with no prospect of resolution. This conference is intended to review the history of Aceh and its relationship with Jakarta in an attempt to shed light on the nature of both the common ground and the contested ground. It brings together a diversity of points of view.
We will review both themes of conflict, divergence and mutual ignorance, as well as those of common action and interaction, in order to demonstrate the sources of current stresses and dilemmas. The Conference will not be a peace-making exercise in itself, but a means to improve the foundation for any such efforts in the future by a better understanding of the past.
