Dear All,
Here is the announcement for a symposium we organize
in Warsaw in November 2004. I would ask you, if you
can, to print it out and post it in your universities.
It would be great to meet you all in November.
The Graduate School of Social Research and the
Institute of Philosophy and Sociology from Warsaw,
Poland announces:
The Sixth Annual Postgraduate Symposium on Central
Eastern Europe:
Beyond “Core” and “Periphery”:
Towards A New Understanding of Central Eastern Europe
Warsaw, November 15th – 19th, 2004
The symposium, previously hosted by University of
California (Berkeley), the School of Slavonic and East
European Studies (London) and the Graduate School for
Social Research (Warsaw), is addressed to postgraduate
students from around the world, whose academic
research is focused on or is relevant to the social,
cultural, political and/or economic issues of Central
Eastern Europe.
The symposium will also host some prominent scholars,
cultural and political figures and NGO activists whose
work and research focuses on Central Eastern Europe,
to deliver speeches or to take part in the round
tables organized throughout the symposium. In this
way, we hope, first, to give an opportunity to
doctoral students to present their dissertations and
to exchange views with other colleagues and
specialists from around the world interested in
similar topics, and second, to ensure dialogue between
students and political and cultural personalities,
activists and researchers, on the past, present and
future of Central Europe.
During each day, five parallel workshops will be
organized in five different areas of social research:
Workshops:
- Social history;
- Mass Media;
- Culture and Arts;
- Issues of Social Exclusion;
- Comparative Perspectives on the Political and
Economic Features of Central Eastern Europe.
