Subject: A book on Global water history tentatively called:
Environmental History of Water
Global views on community water supply and sanitation
eds. Petri S. Juuti, Tapio S. Katko & Heikki S. Vuorinen (1st draft disposition below)
Since the late 1990s we have submitted several applications for a larger project on long-term development of water services in global scale. Although we have not managed to get major funding we have now a proposal for a joint book.
Thus, we would now like to ask if you would be willing to contribute to this book which is a collection of selected articles. What is requested is a short case article on your country/region. Kindly find attached and below the tentative table of contents of the book (disposition).
So please let us know if you are willing and able to write an article (about 2000 – 4000 words) focusing on community water supply and sanitation and its evolution? If you are interested and able to contribute, kindly consider which section of the book (I–IV) your possible article would fit best and send us a draft paper and your proposal on the appropriate section by the 1st of June 2004.
Please let us know by the 15th of April, whether you will be able to contribute or not.
Kindly note that our main focus is water and sanitation services and their evolution rather than water resources. We especially wish that at the end of you paper you discuss shortly the possible links of your case to current water management and policy issues – even future implications. We also encourage you to deal especially with issues like population growth, health, water consumption, technological choices and governance in your paper.
Unfortunately, we have not managed to secure special funding for contributors so far. However, we will be able to send five complimentary copies of the book to all authors.
As for publishing, we will be in touch with a few potential publishers and will do our best to promote the idea. Should we be unsuccessful, we will publish a self-financed version anyway – something similar to the book “From a Few to All” mentioned below.
We aim at truly global perspectives. Thus, even a short text (about 2000 words) would be highly appreciated. We also encourage you to include at least one or a few illustrations (tables, graphs) in your article.
Technical note: Please make endnotes as follows: When a reference is mentioned for the first time: last name first name year, whole title and other details, pages. Second time: last name year, page.
The project team (editors) includes senior researchers from three disciplines at three universities: Petri S. Juuti, Doctor of Philosophy (environmental history) at the University of Tampere; Docent, Doctor of Technology Tapio S. Katko (water and wastewater services) at Tampere University of Technology, and Docent, M.D. Heikki S. Vuorinen, (history of medicine) at the University of Helsinki.
With kind regards,
Editors,
Petri S. Juuti, Tapio S. Katko & Heikki S. Vuorinen
