This international interdisciplinary conference on studies of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, transsexual, bisexual, and queer (LGBTQ) cultures and communities in Asia will be held in Bangkok, Thailand, from Thursday 8th to Saturday 10th July, 2005. The main aims of the conference are to develop linkages between research about Asian LGBTQ cultures and communities and promoting recognition and respect for sexual and gender diversity in the region. A parallel goal of the conference is to support and defend the academic legitimacy of research and teaching about LGBTQ peoples in Asia.
Presentations will be welcomed from academics, researchers, post-graduate students, journalists, and representatives of government agencies, NGOs and LGBTQ communities. The conference language will be English. A program of social and cultural events convened in collaboration with LGBTQ groups and communities from Thailand and other countries is planned.
A call for papers will be circulated in the coming months and a conference website listing further details will also be operating by the middle of 2004. For updates about the status of the conference website please check the AsiaPacifiQueer website later in 2004.
