1st Global Conference
Philosophy with Children: Transdisciplinary Perspectives
Friday 10th September - Sunday 12th September 2004
Mansfield College, Oxford
Keynote Speaker
Dr Joseph Dunne
St. Patrick's College, Dublin City University
This first Global conference aims to bring a multi- and inter-
disciplinary perspective to the topic of doing philosophy with
children. While several countries have notable traditions of offering
Philosophy as a curriculum subject at Primary and/or Second level
education (e.g. France, Germany, Spain), other countries have little
or no tradition in this regard. The ‘Philosophy for Children'
movement, started by Matthew Lipman in the USA, was in some senses an
attempt to offer a corrective to this neglect but more than 30 years
after this movements' inception, it is arguable that a large amount of
this original neglect continues.
This Conference aims to address this issue of the relation between
Philosophy and Education from an international perspective. Papers are
solicited on the following themes:
- Philosophy in early years education – challenges and opportunities
- Philosophy in later childhood/adolescence education
- Opposition to doing Philosophy with Children
- Historical approaches to Philosophy with Children
- Comparative analysis of national (or regional) approaches to the
teaching of philosophy in childhood/adolescence
- Deschooling and Philosophy with Children
- The relation between philosophical and religious education
- The relation between philosophical and ‘social and personal
development' education
- Perspectives on Matthew Lipman's ‘Philosophy for Children' approach
- Alternatives to Lipman
- ‘Thinking Time' in schools
- Childrens' own philosophical perspectives
- Issues of educational ethos in Philosophy with Children
- Childrens' capacity for philosophy
- Philosophical and Intercultural/Development education in
childhood/adolescence
- Moral education and Philosophy with Children
- Comparing Philosophy at primary/second level education and third
level education
These are intended as illustrative themes and proposals on related
areas are encouraged. Panel proposals or joint presentations are also
welcome.
Papers will be considered on any related theme. 300 word abstracts
should be submitted by Friday 4th June 2004. If your paper is accepted
for presentation at the conference, an 8 page draft paper should be
submitted by Friday 13th August 2004.
All papers accepted for and presented at the conference will be
published as an ISBN eBook. Selected papers accepted for and presented
at this conference will be published in a hard copy themed volume.
300 word abstracts should be submitted to both the Organising Joint
Chairs; abstracts may be in Word, WordPerfect, PDF or RTF formats.
The conference aims to bring together people from different areas,
disciplines, professions and interests to share ideas and explore
various discussions which are innovative and exciting.
