The Humanities Research Centre presents this one-day interdisciplinary conference to be held at the University of Warwick on Saturday 8 May 2004. Drawing together established scholars and graduate students from a variety of disciplines, the conference will provide an original forum for the comparative discussion of supernatural beliefs in the period 1660-1830. This timeframe has long been associated with discourses of enlightenment and secularization but this conference seeks to explore inconsistencies within these dominant narratives through the lens of the supernatural world. Although many symposia have taken witchcraft as their subject matter, few have examined aspects of the supernatural as a whole. This event will thus be a valuable opportunity for a number of scholars and graduate students to compare and contrast their findings. Contributions on the day will range from studies of witchcraft, ghosts and demonic possession through to gothic fiction. I hope that the conference will appeal to a wide audience of historians, literary scholars and those with an interest in anthropology, sociology and folklore.
