This session examines portrayals of monsters in literature, art, and film that have as their background the lands of the former Habsburg Empire. The emergence of the monstrous set in central Europe interacted with the perception of the region as a dangerous, oppressive territory. Due in part to the difficulty of travel and the small, autonomous, feudal provinces that persisted in central and eastern Europe far longer than in western Europe, Mitteleuropa, or Habsburg-controlled central Europe, was often portrayed as an uncivilized, barbaric territory in which monstrous forces ruled. Papers on works from any period or country accepted. 250-word abstracts by April 15 to Jenifer Cushman or Isolde Mueller. The MMLA 2004 Conference will take place November 4-7, The Hyatt Regency St. Louis, St. Louis, Missouri.
