Call for Papers
Holocaust in Literature and Film
A Regular Session to be presented at the 2004 SAMLA ANNUAL CONFERENCE
November 12-14
Hotel Roanoke and Convention Center
Roanoke, Virginia
This session will explore the significance of memorial sites in Holocaust film and literature and in the field of Holocaust studies generally. Of central concern is the relation of memory and history to place, and by extension the relation of representation to commemoration. Papers might deal with some of the following questions, although this list is by no means exhaustive: What is the significance of location in Holocaust film and literature? What is an “authentic location” and how is it signified? Is mourning in any way dependent on place? Is it appropriate to treat the Holocaust as a setting or backdrop in fiction? What is the place of fiction and how does it shape our understanding of the past? Behind these questions is another and perhaps more urgent concern about the links between Holocaust topography and topicality. Is Holocaust scholarship related to the growing phenomenon of Holocaust tourism?
Paper Proposals Due March 31, 2004
