AAS Conference – SSRC Japan Program Roundtable:
"Doing Research in Japan: Trends, Practices, and Funding.”
Thursday, March 4th, 2004 3 to 5 pm
San Diego, CA
The Japan Program of the Social Science Research Council is pleased to announce a roundtable entitled "Doing Research in Japan: Trends, Practices, and Funding” at the annual Association for Asian Studies conference. The roundtable will take place on Thursday, March 4, 2004, from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. in the Stratford Room of the San Diego Town & Country Convention Center. Refreshments will be served.
Participants will be drawn from alumni of the SSRC Japan Studies Dissertation Workshop series funded by the Japan Foundation. The workshop has been held annually since 1996 in Monterrey, California. By providing the opportunity to give and receive critical feedback on dissertations in progress, the workshop seeks to create a sustained network of advanced graduate students and faculty. The workshop draws participants from all fields in the social sciences and humanities and from institutions throughout the United States. Individual students lead discussions of their projects with mentor faculty and student peers from varying disciplines to receive creative and critical input on improving their fieldwork plans or writing strategies.
Roundtable participants will make brief presentations on their current projects and will discuss how participating in the workshop influenced their work. Although each participant will bring expertise on a particular region or country in Asia as well as disciplinary training, we hope to create a forum that encourages discussion on less country and discipline-specific themes in favor of more general issues important to late-stage graduate students and how the Dissertation Workshop might benefit them. We will allow most of the session's allotted time to be used for general questions and answers from the audience.
If you have questions regarding the event, please contact Carlton Vann, Program Coordinator of the Japan Program (email@example.com).
We look forward to seeing you at the roundtable.
