The conference is organized in cooperation between architecture (BTU Cottbus) and cultural studies (Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin). First of all, the production of space includes practical as well as symbolic kinds of actions which are culturally specific and want to be reflected as such. In addition, both disciplines have own theoretical approaches to the problem of space which historically have influenced each other again and again. Not least these connections between architecture and cultural studies shall be revived in context of the conference. The crucial questions we are concerned with can be summarized as follows:
1.) Which practical and symbolic kinds of action shape architectural and urban spaces, and how do these spaces in turn form social and cultural practices?
2.) To what extent can the scientific, theoretical discussion of space intervene with the everyday practice of architecture and urban planning?
The contributions to the conference should refer to concrete objects and some of the central aspects of architectural and urban spaces. All contributions should be restricted to 30 minutes.
