New Program in Museum and Archival Studies
Claremont Graduate University, Cultural Studies Department is pleased to announce its new program in Museum and Archival Studies, offering Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy degrees. The Museum Studies concentration in the Cultural Studies Department provides multidisciplinary graduate training within the humanities, and between the humanities and social sciences. Museum studies students approach topics from a multitude of perspectives,studying the theories, canons, and assumptions of several disciplines. Students learn the history and practice of research, interpretation and display of a wide variety of cultural productions. Critical and theoretical changes in the continually transforming field of museums and exhibition are emphasized.
Claremont is located just 35 miles from Los Angeles, one of the most
multicultural and diverse cities in the world, which provides fertile ground for a variety of internships and field-based opportunities. Graduate students are trained in both text-based and field-based work. This collision of methods produces a fully engaged analysis of culture.
Outstanding research that has recently emerged from CGU¹s Cultural Studies Department includes: Video art and documentary production, representing the Holocaust in contemporary Jewish Museums; Sociology of Art; Critical Theories of Space and Geography; Mormonism in Haiti; Afro-feminisim; Asian-America Political and Social Movements; Hip-hop Culture, Gender Studies, and Ethnography.
