Gender:Modernity History in the Making Conference (graduate)

Keynote Speaker: Serge Guilbaut, Professor of Art History, (University of British Columbia), author of How New York Stole the Idea of Modern Art.
Introductory Speaker: Irene Gammel, Professor of English (University of Prince Edward Island), author of Baroness Elsa Gender, Dada, and Everyday Modernity: A Cultural Biography.
Gender and modernity: how do they collide and coexist? Are they separate entities at all?
The ninth History in the Making Conference will be held on March 6, 2004 at Concordia University in Montreal, Quebec. The purpose of the HIM conference is to showcase and workshop the research of graduate students and senior-level undergraduates. Students from all history-related disciplines are welcome.
Each participant will be required to make a 15-20 minute presentation. Finished conference papers should be no longer than 15 pp. A selection of the best papers will be published in the conference's annual proceedings.
Possible topics include:
- teaching gendered history
- intersections of sexual orientation and leadership
- the gendered nation
- depictions of gender in film, print, or other visual media
- technology and sexuality
- sexuality and patriotism
- premodern conceptions of gender
- transgressions of modernity versus transgressions of gender
- atypical modernities
- ...Of course, we welcome most interpretations of the topic.
We encourage creative research and enthusiastic contributions.
Requirements:
- a 500-word (max) abstract of your proposed paper/presentation (as well as your full name, discipline, level of study, and home/email address) is due by January 31st to conference@historyinthemaking.ca. Please include as inline text or Microsoft Word attachment.
- requests for AV should follow acceptance and subsequent confirmation of attendance.
- Submissions and papers may in either English or French.

Joignez-vous à nous pour réfléchir à ces questions. La neuvième édition de la conférence 'History in the Making' aura lieu le 6 mars 2004 à l'Université Concordia, Montréal. Cet événement soulignera la recherche d'étudiants aux cycles supérieurs ainsi qu’aux troisième et quatrième année du baccalauréat. Nous favorisons une approche inter-disciplinaire et les étudiants de divers domaines seront les bienvenus.
La durée de chaque présentation sera d'environ 15 à 20 minutes. Les articles pour la présentation ne doivent pas excéder 15 pages. Les meilleurs seront publiés dans les déliberations annuelles de la conférence.
