The Belgian Luxembourg American Studies Association (BLASA) and the Centre for Historical Research and Documentation on War and Contemporary Society (SOMA-CEGES) are hereby announcing their second call for papers for a two-day residential conference commemorating the 60th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge. The topical scope of the conference will be as broad as possible and include not only military, but also social, political and cultural aspects. These might be the material impact on the civilian population; relations between locals and belligerents; political implications of occupation and liberation; post-war compensation claims; resistance and collaboration; personal accounts of soldiers and non-combatants; literary sources; veterans' societies; local history; oral history. We are particularly interested in American and German contributions, as we already have several Belgian specialists in our speaker line-up.
The conference will take place on Fri-Sat 24-25 September, 2004, in Luxembourg city. Optional excursions to battlefields sites and relevant museums will be organized on Sunday, 26 Sept.
The conference languages will be English and French. Simultaneous translation will be provided.
On a case-by-case basis, some travel funding from the United States may be available for those speakers not able to obtain university funding on the basis of paper acceptance.
Please submit, by February 27, 2004, your proposed title, 500-word abstract, and brief cv.
