Urbanity, Governance & Empire 1850-1950
A one-day workshop exploring urban ideologies, institutions and identities in the imperial context
Venue: Centre for Urban History, University of Leicester
Saturday March 13th, 2004
Historical research on the encounter between Europe and the colonial societies of Africa, Asia and Latin America during the late nineteenth and early twentieth century is currently undergoing major revision in a number of areas including cultural, economic and social history. The Centre for Urban History’s ‘Empires of Expertise’ workshop identified three thematic areas as potential avenues through which we might further our understanding of the colonial encounter from the perspective of urban history, namely:
Information and Knowledge - Regulation and Governance- Identities
The organizers of this workshop invite brief papers/ presentations on these or related themes that focus on the urban dimension of the imperial experience. In particular, we are interested both in the effects of European imperialism on urban societies in the colonial world as well as the manner in which metropolitan Europe was shaped by the colonial encounter. We are keen to explore the potential of new theoretical and analytical approaches to these themes.
New research or work in progress is particularly welcome.
