We are looking for a contributor to write a 1000-word essay on Water
Technology (e.g. Chicago River reversed, Mississippi levees, Soo locks,
draining the Great Black Swamp) for the Encyclopedia of the Midwest, a
project sponsored by The Ohio State University's Institute for
Collaborative Research and Public Humanities and funded in part by the
National Endowment for the Humanities. The print edition will be published
by Indiana University Press.
Although many people are intrigued by the question of midwestern
regionality, few have actually written about it, in large part because the
region is so difficult to define. We view our undertaking not only as an
effort to define the region but also as the creation of a foundation for
continuing conversations about it. We hope that our contributors will
engage scholars and members of the general public in thinking about what
the Midwest is and has been imagined to be. Although we do not require a
specific set of credentials, we would appreciate you sending us your
curriculum vitae or resumé, if you are interested in contributing. Please
contact Deena Adelman via email or phone.
