The Africana Studies Program at Central Missouri State University in Warrensburg invites your participation in their 2nd Bienniel Symposium: Lessons from the past, vision for the future: Celebrating the 50th Aniversary of Brown v. Board of Education, April 1-3, 2004.
The keynote speaker is Cheryl Brown Henderson (younger daughter of the plaintiff, member of the Presidential Brown v. Board of Education 50th Anniversary Commission and President of the Brown Foundation for Educational Equity, Excellence, & Research. Special guests include CMSU's first African American graduates Reverend Price Ellis and Helen Guyton Warren, in 1959.
We seek submissions from all disciplines that explore any aspect of the history and legacy of the landmark decision as well as any topics in African American educational history. Some suggested topics include:
- NAACP Legal Strategies and the Road to Brown
- Historical Biographies & Brown (Thurgood Marshal, Charles Hamilton Houston, Constance Baker Motley, etc)
- Gaines v. Canada & the St. Louis Law School
- Urban School Desegegration:Lessons from St.Louis & Kansas City
- Trailblazers in Higher Education Desegregation
- Desegregation at Historically Black Colleges & Universities
- Impact of School Busing, Magnet, Charter,and Voucher movements
- African American culture and education
- Educational & Economic parity in the 21st century
- Considering Race, Class, & Gender in 21st century educational policies
- Comparative histories: Women, Hispanic, Native Americans, and Asian Americans
- Teaching Brown in the K-12 setting
- Oral History Projects
- Historic Preservation and segregated/desegregated schools
- Undergraduate & Graduate Research Projects
Send completed proposals including title, 500 word abstract, address, phone, fax. e-mail, and a brief bio by December 1, 2003 (snail mail or e-mail attachment in MS Word.) Selected papers will be published in an anthology.
