CANADA’S AIR FORCES @ EIGHTY
An Historical Symposium recognizing the more than 80 Years of traditions and service of Canada’s national air forces
31 March – 4 April 2004
Ottawa, Canada
On the 80th Anniversary of the formation of the Royal Canadian Air Force, Library and Archives Canada (formerly the National Archives of Canada and the National Library of Canada) will host an historical symposium, CANADA’S AIR FORCES @ EIGHTY, from 31 March through 4 April 2004. Co-sponsored by the Ottawa Chapter of the Canadian Aviation Historical Society and the Office of Air Force Heritage and History, 1 Canadian Air Division Headquarters, Winnipeg, the symposium will incorporate the annual general meetings and conferences of the two bodies.
Through individual papers and panel presentations, CANADA’s AIR FORCES @ EIGHTY will probe the almost 95 years of Canadian military aviation — from the earliest Canadian military sponsored flights of 1909, through the events and personalities of the two World Wars and Cold War, to Canada’s Air Force in the New Millennium. In addition to the rich history of the former Royal Canadian Air Force and current Air Command, the records of the previous air arms of the Canadian Army and Royal Canadian Navy will be explored. Both those that have made Canadian aviation history and those that currently study Canada’s military aviation scene will be represented in the program. (See also the Call for Papers.)
CANADA’S AIR FORCES @ EIGHTY will be held in the Auditorium of Library and Archives Canada in downtown Ottawa, with overnight accommodations available only steps away at the Albert at Bay Suite Hotel (http://www.albertatbay.com). In addition to the scheduled formal presentations, events will include a book fair, a pre-conference workshop on archival sources and methodologies for Canadian aviation research, a private reception and tour of the Canada Aviation Museum, and a formal dinner at the historic Royal Canadian Air Force Officers’ Mess (http://www.rcafofficersmess.on.ca) in Ottawa. Make your plans now to attend CANADA’S AIR FORCES @ EIGHTY.
