COLLECTIONS, CULTURES, CHANGE is the first international conference organised by the Centre for Museology, University of Manchester and takes place at the Manchester Museum, 7th-9th November 2003.
COLLECTIONS, CULTURES, CHANGE is about the intellectual, ethical, political and practical dimensions of collections and collecting in the contemporary museum. Curators, critics, academics and artists from Europe and Britain will contribute to this interdisciplinary debate, and will explore issues such as:
- cultural change
- the history and future of the encyclopaedic museum
- the relationships between museums and source communities
- the engagement between artists, collections and museums
- the idea of the reflexive museum, in theory and practice
The conference will bring together leading museum practitioners, academics and artists from the UK, mainland Europe and Canada in a rich interdisciplinary debate on the function of museum collections today. Confirmed speakers include: Jette Sandahl, Tomislav Sola, Angela Volker, Nick Merriman, Mary Bouquet, Tony Bennett, Spring Hurlbut,Thomas Dowson, Laura Peers, Hildi Hawkins, Mark O’Neill, Marysia Lewandowska and Neil Cummings.
