Contributors are sought for an Edited Volume on:“Sustained Peace Educational efforts for Social Cohesion and Co-existence in International Conflict and Post-Conflict Societies”
The suggested Volume is a first international effort to present studies on education for peace and co-existence, reconciliation and social cohesion, particularly in high-conflict societies or societies making the transition from protracted conflict to the consolidation of peace.
We aim at a volume which will
- present the most recent theoretical advances in the field
- analyze the social, cultural, political, historical and economical contexts within which peace and coexistence education develops and must be critiqued
- prove into the epistemology which nourishes its development and the practices which characterize its implementation
- reflect on the variety of educational contexts in which it is practiced
- consider central issues raised by these educational efforts with regard to self and group identities.
We anticipate the volume will include contributions from a wide variety of disciplinary fields and methodological approaches while exemplifying the multiple venues of peace educational labor with a strong emphasis on integrative, sustained long-term educational efforts.
Papers that address the following aspects of sustained peace education will be particularly welcome.
- THE PURPOSES OF SUSTAINED PEACE/CO-EXISTENCE EDUCATIONAL EFFORTS
Sustained peace/co-existence educational efforts can serve various purposes, including the support of basic education, education for social change, education which facilitates integration, prevents assimilation, and/or encourages social segregation, etc. Papers that explore the nature of long term peace education as it relates to these purposes and others are welcome.
- THE STRATEGIES AND CURRICULAR APPROACHES FOR SUSTAINED PEACE/CO-EXISTENCE EDUCATIONAL EFFORTS
Sustained peace/co-existence education is conducted through a variety of strategies and curricular approaches, including formal and informal educational approaches, traditional or critical educational perspectives, disciplinary, cognitive and/or experiential approaches, etc. Papers that examine the strategies and curricular approaches offered and the interaction of these within the wider socio-political context in which they take place can enrich discussions of the most appropriate arrangements for sustained peace education to achieve various goals.
- CROSS-NATIONAL/CULTURAL PERSPECTIVES
Different societal settings have made different arrangements for providing long term peace/co-existence education. Studies that compare these various approaches and policies may shed light on the relative impact of these diverse arrangements for achieving the societal and individual goals connected to sustained peace education.
- THE EFFECTIVENESS OF SUSTAINED PEACE/CO-EXISTENCE EDUCATIONAL EFFORTS
The substantial investments in sustained peace/co-existence education programs and activities by both institutions and individuals lead to calls for the assessment of the impact of sustained peace education. Studies that consider the effectiveness of various methods and strategies in adult education are welcome.
We will welcome a full range of theoretical and methodological approaches. Submissions may take a variety of forms including articles presenting new empirical work in this area or theoretical essays on these topics.
Potential contributors to the Volume should contact the editors for more information.
