AWARD-WINNING PBS SERIES WIDE ANGLE
FREE EDUCATION PACKAGE OF COMPLETE PROGRAMS
Thanks to a generous grant from the Ford Foundation, Thirteen/WNET, New York’s flagship public television station, is offering instructors a FREE SET of programs from Wide Angle, the award-winning international PBS current affairs documentary series. Wide Angle examines the most pressing social, political and economic issues confronting citizens and policymakers around the globe. The package includes five programs from Season One on videocassette and a 24-page Discussion Guide with insightful essays, discussion topics and suggested resources. Each program consists of a 45-minute film followed by a 10-minute discussion with a policy expert. Selected segments at the top of each cassette highlight the themes and offer opportunities for discussion. This Wide Angle Education Package will be useful in international relations, economics, political science, and journalism, as well as other courses.
PROGRAMS INCLUDED
TO HAVE AND HAVE NOT profiles the sharp economic divide among citizens in the world’s most populous nation, as China’s membership in the WTO accelerates the difficult process of economic modernization.
GREETINGS FROM GROZNY portrays the relentless war between Russia and the break-away Republic of Chechnya, providing unprecedented coverage of Russian troops conducting “sweeps” in war-torn Chechnya and a rare view into life in a Chechen rebel camp.
THE EMPTY ATM reveals how Argentinians are coping with their shattered economy, including the explosive growth of the “barter clubs” that challenge the need for traditional monetary currency.
CAUSE FOR MURDER explores the tragic stories of two young female lawyers in Mexico, both killed for challenging the endemic corruption and human rights abuses that continue to plague the nation, despite the reformist agenda of President Vicente Fox.
SOUL OF INDIA focuses on a tragic new chapter in the bloody Hindu-Muslim conflict in India’s Gujarat State, and explores what the rise of the Hindu fundamentalist movement may mean for the world’s largest democracy.
