I am seeking colleagues in Native American history/culture to join me in a
panel for the Western History Association Annual Conference to be held
October, 2004, in Las Vegas. I am interested in putting together a panel in
which the papers are organized around the broad theme of Native Americans
and relations with peoples or governmental institutions of the Hispanic
Southwest. In particular, I am interested in papers that emphasize the
agency of Native people in terms of inventive and creative assertions of
self determination and the refusal of indigenous peoples to acquiesce in
their own destruction. For example, in my paper, I will be exploring the
efforts of Native leaders to solicit government to government relations with
Mexico to create a viable alternative to the forced dislocation policies of
the US government in the 1820s and 30s. Please send a one-page abstract and
c.v. by email or fax before August 15.
