“Middle Eastern and Islamic Influence on Western Art and Liturgy: Cultural exchanges in late Antiquity and the Middle Ages”

We solicit 20-minute papers on such topics as:
- routes of influence (sea and trade routes; from Spain to Ireland and Britain and Irish foundations in Europe; from Syria and Anatolia through Aquileia to Milan and Gaul; from Sicily, Cyprus, and Morea; from North Africa)
- documentary references (reports of travellers to and from the Middle East)
- positive evidence for influence on Western literature, art, music and its notation, poetry, liturgy, and other material culture.
The conference will be organized as a series of round-table discussions, in which the participants have seen each others’ papers in advance. We intend to publish the proceedings. Deadline for abstracts: 15 September 2003, deadline for papers: 31 December 2003. Please put “Annual Conference” on the envelope or in the email subject line.
