CALL FOR PROPOSALS (due Oct. 10, 2003)
"Brown v. Board of Education in Washington, DC"
A thematic issue of Washington History, published by the Historical Society of Washington, DC, scheduled for Fall 2004
We are developing a thematic issue of Washington History magazine that will investigate the local history of the Brown decision in Washington, DC. DC contributed one of the cases that became combined with Brown, and also experienced the earliest school integration, beginning in September of 1954.
The consequences of the Brown decision for DC were significant and numerous.
We are asking anyone doing relevant work on this topic to please submit a one-page proposal detailing your topic, thesis, and possible sources. As we are in the planning stages, we are open to all possible relevant topics, and list the following as guidance:
- Leadership of Howard University (broadly defined--legal, social science,training, etc.)
- School integration in the District (broady or featuring specific schools)
- Consequences of Brown for the broader community (outside of education)
- Bolling v. Sharpe case/John Philip Sousa Junior High
- biographical treatments of important players in this local history
If interested, please submit a one-page proposal along with a short-form vita by Friday, October 10, 2003.
