Call for papers on 'Mapping America as a sign of liberation or containment' panel, European Association for American Studies, Prague, Czech Republic, April 2-5, 2004. Papers are sought on the identification of certain forms of emancipation or containment as 'American'. We are interested in theoretical approaches which make sense of the ambivalent and complex identifications generated by this intra- and inter-national dynamic. We welcome work in any relevant fields and topics, including but not limited to the influence of US activists (in terms of race, gender, sexuality, or other) outside the USA, on the trans-Atlantic gendered and sexual resonances found in music, film, literature, etc., on the 'Americanisation' of Eastern Europe, and on the identification of eroticised consumption as American.
