The steering committee for the Seventh Annual Graduate Student History and Theory Conference at the University of California, Irvine, invites proposals for its 2003 conference. The conference will be held November 1-2 on the University of California, Irvine campus. This conference will explore the way that notions of tradition have been employed in both historical action and rhetoric. The keynote speaker is Jackson Lears of Rutgers University; roundtable participants are Vinay Lal, UCLA; Bob Mueller, UCI; and Yen Le Espiritu, UCSD. Interdisciplinary graduate student papers and panels are welcomed, as are presentations using multimedia or performance. Panel and paper topics might include (but are not limited to) the following:
- Conservatism and Conservative Movements
- Memory and Memorials
- Nationalism and National Identity
- Rhetoric and Constructions of Traditionalism
- Colonialism/Postcolonialism
- Narratives of Traditionalism and Narratives of Progress
- Gender and Race
- Politics, Culture, and Power
- Language and Discourse
- Subjectivities and Identities
- Creations of Tradition
Submission Information:
Proposals for individual presentations and panels should reach us by July 15, 2003. Late submissions will be accepted on a space-available basis.
Individual submissions must include:
- Cover page with name, address, phone number and e-mail
- Abstract of no more than 250 words
- A short (two-page maximum) CV
Panel submissions must include:
- Cover page for each participant with name, address, phone number and e-mail (Please specify panel organizer)
- Panel abstract of no more than 250 words
- 250 word description of each paper
- A short (two-page maximum) CV for each participant
Panels will consist of three participants. We will provide chairs and discussants for all panels.
