This conference - taking place in London at the Institute of Historical Research and sponsored by the University of Hertfordshire - follows from the successful ‘Britain and the Cold War’ held in 1997. Historical attention has turned to the cultural dimensions of the Cold War, and this conference brings together this newer research on British Cold War culture – of a ‘low’, ‘high’ and ‘middlebrow’ nature. Themes include British ‘McCarthyism’, film and theatre, education, consumerism, US ‘cultural imperialism’, and nuclear culture. Scholars from a number of countries including Britain, the USA, Japan and Greece will be presenting material.
