Marking the completion of the first phase of the Old Bailey Online project, this conference will highlight current research undertaken on the Old Bailey Proceedings and similar sources. It will bring together papers that exemplify the new histories of the body, and of space, of gender and of sexuality, race and identity, and which at the same time take as their objects of study non-elite people caught up in social conflict. It will showcase new approaches to writing the histories of crime, justice and punishment, and in the process will combine the best of the tradition of 'history from below' with the most innovative theoretical developments of the last thirty years. We anticipate most contributors will present work based on the Proceedings, but also welcome papers derived from other sources, periods and places that reflect a similar concern with the lives and agency of non-elite people.
