Se solicitan propuestas sobre cualquier aspecto de Muerte y Cultura en México, Latinoamérica o estados unidos. Interesan especialmente temas interdisciplinares y transculturales. Favor de avisar a colegas de la convocatoria.
Papers are welcome on any aspect of deathways in Mexico, Latin
America, and the United States. Interdisciplinary and cross-cultural topics are especially welcome. Please circulate this call for papers among your
colleagues and through your lists.
Temas incluyen pero no se limitan a los siguientes:
Topics include but are not limited to the following:
- DíAS DE MUERTOS/ DAYS OF THE DEAD: in Mexico, Latin America, and as it has developed in the u.s..
- CEMETERIES, GRAVEMARKERS, AND MEMORIALS: national, regional, and local practices and trends in the design, iconography, and rhetoric of
gravemarkers, cemeteries, and memorials; also, ethnicity, gender, class, and race in the cemetery and memorialization; memorialization, the cult of
the hero, and the state.
CEMENTERIOS, TUMBAS, MEMORIALES: costumbres nacionales, regionales o locales en el diseño, la iconografía y la retórica de tales memoriales; también, etnia, clase, sexo en el cemeterio o el memorial; culto del heroe, et cétera.
- DEATH & CULTURE: Think: history of consciousness; death and
literature, death and music (pop or classical), death and games, death and
plastic arts... Public and private death-related rituals including mourning
customs; the social and cultural construction of death; funeral customs
and the funeral industry; changing attitudes toward death, the dead
body, and its disposal.
MUERTE Y CULTURA: Piénsese en historia de las mentalidades; muerte y literatura, muerte y música, muerte y juegos, muerte y artes plásticas... Rituales públicos y privados relacionados a la muerte, incluyendo costumbres de duelo; construcción y discurso social y cultural en torno a la muerte; costumbres fúnebres; cambios en la actitud hacia la muerte, el muerto, et cétera.
Twenty-minute papers or three-person panels treating any aspect of
the topic are welcome. Deadline for proposals is june 5, 2003. Please send a 250-word abstract in english or spanish and a description of Audio/Visual needs by e-mail by june 8, to "DEATH AND CULTURE" area chair:
