MOBILE GLOBAL ASIA

32nd Annual Mid-Atlantic Region Association for Asian Studies Meeting October 24-26, 2003, The George Washington University, Washington DC

The 2003 MAR/AAS Annual Conference will be held at The George Washington University from October 24-26, 2003. The conference theme will be "Mobile Global Asia." The movement of people, ideas, cultures, and products has produced an Asia that is undeniably global, but mobility is hardly new to Asia. We especially seek proposals that address any topic related to the mobile global. Among the issues that the conference theme embraces are the impact of globalization on Asia and our teaching of Asia, the potential for overcoming political boundaries in the interests of peace in Asia, and surmounting the institutional and disciplinary boundaries that have determined the creation of knowledge in our Mid-Atlantic region, not least between scholars of Asia and local diasporic communities, and between Asian-Americanists and Asianists.

Participants are invited to submit proposals related to the theme, although all submissions will be considered. To propose a panel or an individual paper, please send this completed form along with a one-page abstract for each proposed paper by May 1, 2003 to the postal address below or submit the application and abstract by email. The application is also available at our website. If you are submitting a proposal by email, please make sure to include all the information listed on the form, including name(s), institutional affiliation, contact information for all panel participants (mailing address, telephone number and email address), AV needs, and MAR/AAS membership status.

In order to submit a proposal for the 2003 meeting you must be a 2003 MAR/AAS member or submit a membership application together with the proposal. (Note: if you attended the 2002 Annual Meeting in Baltimore your membership has been paid for 2003.) Annual MAR/AAS membership is $10.00. June 15 is the deadline for conference preregistration for presenters ($35.00 for members, $25.00 for students). Preregistration by this date is necessary if you wish your name to appear in the program.
