Arrogance and Envy, the 2003 Russian Film Symposium (May 5-10, Pittsburgh, USA), will focus on the anti-Americanism in communist and post-communist cinema over five decades (1950s-2000s). The event provides a scholarly arena where participants can examine the narrative and visual strategies of negative US stereotypes by Russo-Soviet filmmakers who have worked under eight political leaders from Stalin through Putin in constructing Americans as the enemy. No other geo-political space has a comparable history (in length of time or diversity of representational approaches) in generating anti-American images. The film screenings are accompanied by discussions, commentaries, and prepared research papers.
